History
Founding in 1904:
Former Gov. Harry Leslie founded the Purdue University College Republicans in 1904. Gov. Leslie was Governor of Indiana from January 14, 1929 to January 9, 1933. He was born in West Lafayette and graduated from Purdue University. While at Purdue he played football for Purdue University until a train wreck that killed sixteen of his teammates. After his miraculous survival, Harry Leslie finished his studies and went to law school at IU. Upon receiving his law degree he opened up a law firm in Lafayette and became involved in local politics until his ascension to Governorship in 1929.
As Governor, Harry Guyer Leslie led Indiana through the Great Depression, during which time he reduced taxes and expenses of government. ‘Leslie Field’ was home of the West Lafayette Red Devil football team for 75 years before their move to the Salisbury Athletic Complex. The Indiana Legislature also established that State Road 26 Bridge over the Wabash River between West Lafayette and Lafayette be named “Governor Leslie Memorial Bridge.” He is the only Purdue Graduate ever to become Governor of Indiana. Gov. Leslie left an indelible positive contribution for our state and the conservative cause. The Purdue University College Republicans hold an annual ‘Leslie Day’ dinner in honor of his legacy.
